Tom is going to Utah

On February 15th, the Professional Ski Instructors of America's national office invited me to go to Utah at the end of April to attend the National Alpine Team tryouts. I am one of 45 instructors from around the country who made it through the first round.

PSIA is looking to form a team of 12 alpine instructors who they feel are inspirational educators and skiers. This team of 12 will travel the country for four years, providing clinics to instructors at ski areas all over the US. In 2015, the team will be attending the International Ski Congress or Interski, where all the skiing nations come together and share ideas and present to each other.

The team tryouts will be held at Snowbird, Utah from the 22nd to the 26th of April. There will be skiing tasks, teaching tasks and interviews taking place over the course of five days. I look forward to going to the event  and skiing with the top 45 teachers in the US.

And now the training begins ...

My New Position

I have some good news and some bad news, but it is all the same news.

The Winter Park Ski and Ride School has hired me to be an On-Snow Supervisor for the children's school. In this role I will developing and managing the 140 or so full time instructors who teach children. I look forward to expanding my own experience and helping the other instructors develop their skills, so that they can increase the value of your lessons.

However this means that I am not as available for lessons as I have been in the future. That doesn't mean that I won't be able to teach throughout the season. If you have already booked a lesson with me, I will honor that agreement. If you are a returning guest, you will be able to book a session with me, but you will have to let me know far enough in advance so that I can have another supervisor cover my position at Ski School.

I would love to ski with all of my guests who I have skied with in the past, and I will endeavor to continue skiing with you. However, if you are a new guest or a returning guest and we cannot make the timing work, I am always ready to recommend another instructor to suit your needs.

I hope to see you all on the slopes soon!

First Snow in the Rockies and you'll never guess which resort in North America opened first!

On October 6th the first significant snowfall came into the Rockies. In the valleys we saw around 6 inches of accumulation and more on the mountain tops. Temperatures, however, are expected to rise over the coming week and we will likely see snow in the valleys melt away. Hopefully the snow on the mountain tops will stay as snowmaking operations in Winter Park are expected to begin in mid-October.

Julie and I went for a walk around Winter Park as we were very excited for the first snow. We should have brought cross country skis! I was very surprised with the amount of accumulation.

The big news for this weekend though was that the North America Winter Ski Season has begun. On October 8th at least two ski areas opened for the winter. Wolf Creek in Colorado started their season with full resort services, 3 lifts and 3 feet of powder!

The big news is that the first ski area in the US to open was in the least expected place. Ski and Snowboard Resort Las Vegas Nevada beat Wolf Creek by an hour to win the title. They opened with a 12 inch base and very limited services. It is unknown if these resorts will open next weekends but we can hope. Last year the title went to Loveland Ski Area, Colorado who opened on October 24th.

Congratulations if you guessed right, and keep hoping for snow!
